Securing Your Server

Essential steps to protect your Minecraft server from griefers and hackers.

1. Enable the Whitelist

The simplest way to protect your server is to only allow trusted players to join.

  1. Run the command whitelist on in your console.
  2. Add players using whitelist add PlayerName.

2. Permissions Management (LuckPerms)

Never give OP (Operator) status to anyone unless absolutely necessary. OPs have full control over the server.

Instead, use a permissions plugin like LuckPerms to grant specific abilities (like /gamemode or /tp) to moderators without giving them full access.

3. Online Mode

Ensure that online-mode=true is set in your server.properties file. This verifies that all connecting players have paid, legitimate Minecraft accounts. Disabling this (Offline Mode) allows hackers to log in with your username and take over your server.

4. Backups

Always keep regular backups. RYN Host provides automated off-site backups on premium plans, but you should also manually create backups before making major changes.
